Staffing, Convention, April 1 Deadline, What does 7007 mean?

Staffing: This is the season of notes from principals asking for a quick meeting about next year.  We know that these staffing discussions can be stressful and a bit confusing.  Remember AHEM can be a resource to help you understand the intricacies of your situation. If you are facing unrequested leaves, involuntary transfers, or any other staffing type of decision, we’ll be happy to walk through your situation with you – just give us a call at 763.421.9110.

ED MN Rep Convention: We have a couple spots left if you would like to represent your colleagues at the Education Minnesota Representative Convention.  The convention is held April 27-28 at the Doubletree Hotel in Bloomington.  The Rep Convention is our state union’s highest governing body and makes major decisions about our actions and chooses our leaders.  We provide an association leave day, hotel, and expenses for those who take their time to do the work of our organization. Email us at ahem@anoka.k12.mn.us if you are interested.

April 1st Deadline for Ceasing Extracurricular Duties:  Reminder to those who participate in extracurricular duties: if you are not planning to continue in your role next year, let your principal or supervisor know by April 1st. Here’s the exact language from our contract: “Teachers wishing to cease participating in duties for which compensation is received shall notify the Principal by April 1, so that the teacher shall be relieved of such duties for the following year.” (Article IV, Section 8, page 3 of our orange contract book)

Good Question – What does the 7007 mean in the AHEM logo?  Every local union that is part of the American Federatio of Teachers (AFT) is given a number upon entering.  When the Minnesota Education Association (MEA) and the Minnesota Federation of Teachers (MFT) merged in 1998, all the former MEA locals, like us, were given our number at that time.  We are the 7007th  local to join the AFT, hence our number.
